The Events and Message of Adam Mansbach’s Angry Black White Boy - Literature Essay Samples

The concept of an entire race being born into a system subconsciously and socially degrading them is appalling. Underprivileged and undeserving, these unfortunate people groups are cast into mediocrity and suppressed under the unbearable weight of white supremacy. African Americans in particular experience this at as great or greater a degree as any other race, as is vividly displayed in Adam Mansbach’s Angry Black White Boy, a novel that satirically describes the unfortunate circumstances of blacks in America through a masterful narrative and polarizing truths about white society. Following white Jew Macon Detornay, who better self-identifies with black culture, Angry Black White Boy exposes the atrocities in both obvious and covert Caucasian view of blacks. Early in the text, the Bostonian college freshman and descendant of the legendary and notoriously racist first baseman â€Å"Cap Anson†, moves to New York to attend Colombia University, where he rooms with Andre Walker, the descendant of the famously-tormented-by-Cap-Anson baseball player â€Å"Fleet† Walker. Macon quickly gets a job as a taxi driver, an occupation which further exposes the self-absorption of whites in their loose-tongued conversations with both Macon and their colleagues. Frustrated and angered with the self-righteous attitudes of his passengers, Macon begins robbing them, stealing their wallets and neckties. Feeling as though his efforts are teaching the â€Å"white devil(s)† (Mansbach 24) a lesson, he is understandably displeased when the police reports of his actio ns describe a black thief, as his victims are unable to connect their recollection of the events to Macon’s white face. Furious, Macon clearly displays his face to his next victim, demanding the displeased backseat rider to confirm his ethnicity, â€Å"Take a good look. What fucking color am I?† (Mansbach 112). Titled â€Å"Trader†, the first book in this novel refers to Macon trading his whiteness for black culture, hanging up his Bean boots in exchange for some fresh Jordan’s, as he begins his crusade for equality and reparation for the sins of his ancestors. The second book, â€Å"Traitor†, foretells in its title Macon’s downfall in regards to his commitment to the Race Traitor Project cause, and his subsequent abandonment of it. The book begins with Downing and McGrath, New York’s white-as-the-crack-epidemic Batman and Robin police duo, arriving at Colombia to arrest Macon since he fits the description of his last victim’s recollection of the robbery. After being beaten by the police in the car, Macon is taken to a holding cell where he remained only for a short while until Andre and his friend Nique bailed him out. Upon his release, Macon discovers that his heroics have spread quickly throughout the news and catapulted him to stardom, and paparazzi have been waiting in mass outside the police station. In his first public speaking, Macon declares the bold mission statement of what will be his campaign for long-awaited justice, â€Å"White people aren’t evil, but evil is white people.† (Mansbach 144). Preceded by Nique energizing the crowd, Macon holds a poetry reading at one two fifth and Lenox, where Malcolm X preached, where he narrates a self-written piece outlining his beliefs of America’s racial system and treatment of African Americans. He then speaks controversially on a radio station, followed by a television talk show where he speaks of the racist mental processes of whites when they see a black person in various circumstances. Finally, Macon then goes on another talk show, Pedantic Perspectives, where he boldly declares, on behalf of his â€Å"Race Traitor Project†, the upcoming Friday to be the first annual â€Å"Day of Apology† (Mansbach 204) in New York. The purpose of the event is for white people to apologize to blacks for all of the ways in which they have mistreated, judged, or wrongly viewed them. At the following rally on the Day of Apology, Macon begins to witness the mutation of his idea, as the common white interpretation is to im merse themselves in black culture, donning flamboyant African-American attire and listening to their music. White appropriation of black culture is an age-old practice, through white’s assumption of black music and its production once it was viewed as profitable and many other aspects (George 1-21). After making the crowd aware of their inaccuracy of interpretation, Macon sends them out to apologize, hoping they will come to understand the meaning of the event through executing it. Juxtaposed with the misinterpretation of those mentioned previously, Mansbach then describes several circumstances of the genuine, intended purposed of the event being carried out. While walking the streets of New York, Macon, Nique, and Andre witness the chaos ensuing when several are killed in a conflict initiated by a racist white man calling Macon a â€Å"nigger lover† (Mansbach 250) who fires a pistol at them repeatedly. Firing into the air with Macon’s gun, Nique’s bullet falls and kills a Black Hebrew protestor, while the bullet of the assailant ricochet and struck a white woman that had been trying to apologize to blacks, but to no avail. In order to stop the madness, Macon goes on local news to say that he has realized the white race is incapable of redemption and tells them they would be best to kill themselves. He then places a gun in his own mouth and realizes that he himself is unwilling to die for the cause. Macon steals the news station van and abandons his friends, his cause and chiefly, his beliefs. Arriving in New Jersey at the start of book 3, â€Å"Race†, Macon boards a bus to go to Los Angeles and falls asleep. Upon waking, he finds that he is in Alabama and decides to get off the bus and go use a pay phone to contact Nique and Andre, where he discovers that Nique has assumed command. Nique then makes a proposal to Macon that he meet with Dr. Conway Donner, descendant of â€Å"Red Donner† who famously died a martyr for Fleet Walker, who desires Macon’s established platform to market his psychological methods of modifying the image and cultural identity of people to whatever they choose. Macon meets with him and declines and before boarding the bus again, he goes into a store to acquire food for his trip. Unknowingly to Macon, the rednecks that recognize and kidnap him and another black man (who also is involved in the arrangement) in the store are all part of an elaborate scheme constructed by Nique and Dr. Donner to display the effectiveness of his prog ram. Being taken out to a remote location, Macon is given the choice to punch the black man or be shot, and he punches him. He is then handed the gun to kill the man but he, as expected, attempts to use it on his captors. Finding it is empty, Nique and Dr. Donner arrive to reveal the truth to Macon and once again make their bid for his endorsement. One of the kidnappers, Burleigh, sees letting Macon live as a â€Å"goddamn crime against humanity† (Mansbach 334), before declaring that Macon is no longer white. He then shoots Macon in the head, solidifying his martyrdom for a cause that he seemingly abandoned in its time of greatest need. Rumored to have been extinguished long ago with slavery now being a relic of our nation’s blemished history and the Civil Rights movements being so effective, racial issues are often disregarded in the aspect of their relevancy today. Mansbach clearly challenges and effectively supports the fact that this is not the case, as racist agenda still runs rampant throughout the country, stampeding over those receiving the blunt of its baton. Macon’s pathos is established through his genuine and respectful appropriation of black culture, while many other figures establish credibility off of their own experiences, such as Jay-Z in â€Å"Coming of Age†, â€Å"chasin’ crackheads up the block for my pay† (Jay-Z 43) referencing his own life as a drug dealer. Its principal subject is that of romance that may settle over the land after soldiers come home. I noticed that Much Ado is actually two love stories. One concerns sweetly innocent lovers who are driven apart by the plotting of enemies. I had a lot of trouble understanding the dialect, I grew up a country boy and we didn?t do much of this in my 14 persons graduating class. None the less I didn?t think it was a waste of time either. He (Branagh the movie director) also left out offensive references that are in the actual play. I think in comparison that movies are focused on visuals, surr oundings and the lead in to a scene. This takes more time where the play does not. If the movie had done every thing just like the play and still held true to their camera attractions think the movie would have been twice as long. Another thing I found to vary between the play and the movie is that the movie is great in having close ups and all of that, but because of this you don?t get to see the rest of the scene at the same time, like the background acting. Sometimes it is good to see everything that is going on in a room or courtyard, rather than just seeing 2 minutes of a person?s face. Also it degrades the actors full involvement such as body movement and mannerisms when you only see their face. The globalization economy invites every individuals and communities from dissimilar human races as well as cultures in order to study or work collectively and later create products to be easily accepted and used by the people from several races, cultures and consuetudes. Cross culture management also helps to improve multinational enterprises. One must study in depth about the typical relationship that exists between the behavior of the management and the performance of the expatriates. There are huge numbers of factors that affects the cross culture management (Primecz, Romani Sackmann, 2011). Apart from this, cross culture management is considered to be a means of gaining most active accommodation of managerial behaviors and more effective presentation in overseas. There are several ways to explore cross culture management. For an example, every culture can be easily examined and analyzed in terms of several components such as individuals behavior, similar habits and customs or one can easily compare and contrast some of the hidden facts of culture such as unspoken and implicit traditional or conventional attitudes, values and beliefs, methods of gaining reality and the ways of interaction (Birkinshaw, Brannen Tung, 2011). There are large number of cultures that promote ideas of individualism, collectivism and interdependence. In any organization, managements is considered to be a type of activity which includes arts and science along with several categories of personnel. The major aim of the management is to gather information, skills, experience and knowledge which will assist the business to gain a competitive environment and boost its growth in terms of global market place and profits. In addition to this, communication is one of the facto r which aims at exchanging information from one to another. Thus, cross culture communication is the way to communicate between many cultures and lingual communities which has totally dissimilar forms, attitudes, countries and many more (French, 2015). Holle and G. Trader were the first who introduced the term cross cultural management in the book named culture and communication. The writers claimed that the culture and communication are two different perspectives. Later several issues were debated by Aristotle, G. Leibniz, I. Gerder, I. Kant, V. Humboldt and others (Cross culture management, 2017). Numerous scholars suggested models and algorithms that helps to analyze the culture and dimensions of different countries. One of the most used model is known as Iceberg Analogy. Peoples explicit behavior characteristics easily represents them and one can easily identify the changes. For an instance, if a person appears in the former Soviet Union, the locals generally had no issues to identify because more of the foreign guests spoke another language used to wear bright color clothes and had smiles on the face every time- a little that the Soviet people had rarely in public. So, human behavior is placed on the top of the iceberg (Hofstede, 2010). When it happens that one enter another culture, external culture is usually viewed at the top of the iceberg. Every person have different language, gestures to express his or her views, different food and different ways to manage business operations. Whenever a person lives in different country, he starts adjusting new styles along with new customs. It is one of the easiest part of the iceberg which is situated on the top. Beliefs lies on the middle of the iceberg. It can be related to politics, religion or economy (Wild, Wild Han, 2014). For an example, if a tourist enter this part by mocking national political system, the locals reactions cannot be easily predicted. The most crucial and hidden part of the culture of at the base. The main components hidden are basic values, thinking abilities and ways and views of world (Velo, 2011). The base part is the most difficult part because this part is very complex in nature and cannot be easily understood and reflected upon. For an instance, an American boss who speaks fluent in Russia, is fond of Russian food, loves to dress like a Russian but grew up in USA and that is the reason the boss was considered to be a product of American culture. So, it can be concluded from the above exam ple that however a person adopts another culture or any other external elements, it not important that he or she can be changed from inside (Mor, Morris Joh, 2013). In order to ensure the effectiveness of cross culture management organization, explicit and hidden part of the iceberg must be analyzed properly. One of the probable approaches while dealing with a fresh cultural pattern must be Not better, not worse, but just different (Deresky, 2017). Other theory was stated by Greet Hofstede who described the effects of societys culture on the values of its members, and how these values communicate to behavior, by means of a structure resulting from factor analysis. Some of the dimensions that identify the national cultures are Power Distance Index, Individualism (IDV) vs. collectivism, Uncertainty avoidance index (UAI), Masculinity (MAS), vs. femininity, Long-term orientation (LTO), vs. short term orientation and Indulgence versus restraint (IVR) (Tjosvold, 2017). Thus from the above essay, it can be summarized that cross culture management helps in understanding the effects of national cultures on management practices. It can also be concluded that cross culture communication focuses on the similarities and dissimilarities that exists across the various cultures in organizational context.
